Foreign Familiarity

Today, I sang in the church choir.

Last week, I came to church early because I was teaching Sunday School. Because I was a little too early, I sat in the sanctuary and listened to the orchestra practice. And all of a sudden it dawned on me: I play the flute... that would be fun to play the flute again... I actually brought my flute to Missouri... I wonder if they need more people to play flute...

I have no idea why this never occurred to me before... and I have no idea why I decided to bring my flute when I moved since I rarely ever even consider playing it. So I ended up being directed to talk to the music director because I guess they had been needing more flutes for Easter. But by the time I talked with Jean, he said, "I think we're okay with flutes... can you sing?"

So there you have it. I joined the choir for Easter.

And it was SO WEIRD to be performing again. I spent basically my entire childhood performing in some form or another with dance, piano, flute, or singing. But its been 6 years since I've done any of that. So jumping back into it was so familiar and yet so completely foreign at the same time.

It was terrifying... and wonderful... and now I'm staying in the choir... and Jean wants to put me in the orchestra, too. Ha ha... I find this all terribly amusing. How is it that I've only been at this church for 3 months and I'm more involved here than I've ever been at any of the other churches I've attended? ;)
