Today, instead of a honkin' large blog, you get an assemblage of different thoughts and events from my day.
Flag Day
I did not know that there was a flag day. But this morning I looked at my calendar and lo and behold... today is Flag day. Well, you'd think that that would be self explanatory, but since Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor day all feel like "flag days," I wanted to know what was special about today... so I had to look it up. Today is the day that Congress voted in 1777 (229 years ago... wow, we're babies) to adopt the US National Flag. I thought that was pretty cool!
12 Doors
There are twelve doors in the "room" that I sit in all day. Two lead out front (one of which is broken), two lead to conference rooms, two are for the elevator, one is to the lab where they make medical devices, one is a closet/storage room (I think), and one is a restroom.
Noisy Silence
A good portion of my day there is silence. The phone doesn't ring and no one needs me... or is even around for that matter. So I sit... and wait... and inevitably begin to tune-in to the many sounds that appear in the silence.
Most notable is the clicking of the doors. there are four or five doors that seem to shift with the unnoticeable change in air pressure. When they shift, they click... usually one right after the other... there are two above me (on the second floor - its a tall 2-story ceiling above me), two in front and one to the side. There went one: click... its almost like a tap... there's another... click click.... click........... click click.
The Nose Knows
My nose does not lie. I came back to the lobby after my lunch break and I knew I smelled my favorite food: pizza. I immediately dismissed this thought because there wasn't any pizza in sight and I haven't had pizza in so long that I'm bound to smell some phantoms.
But the smell didn't go away. And then all of a sudden, it dawned on me: both conference rooms are full... they must be having lunch meetings. Not too long afterward what should appear, but two women leaving Honolulu (the smaller conference room... Hawaii is the big one... he he, I think its cute) carrying plates piled high with pizza... my nose does not lie.
I don't care where your mailbox is!
I don't care if you're a high muckity-muck, and you're super hot stuff and you like to joke and be friendly with everyone, but really, you're not the happiest person and you're a total control freak... and you're not my supervisor, so I don't care where your mailbox is, don't scold me for doing something that you don't think I should do.
I may be new, but I actually was trained (believe it or not) and I was instructed to do something that may be out of the ordinary, but you don't know the situation, you simply walked in and made an uninformed judgement. So butt out and stop making me feel like I'm only an inch tall. If you really have a concern, talk to my supervisor about it... or just worry about managing your own department... ya... that might be good.
[Sorry, I had to vent... this guy made me really mad yesterday]
Awk-ward...
So I'm not really used to a room going silent when I walk into it. And granted, the kitchenette here at work is a small room... its more like a wide hallway with a counter and a fridge at the end, but it feels even smaller when there are five men standing in it.
So, I turn into the room and suddenly they are all silent, watching me. There's just enough room for me to walk in, put something in the fridge, and walk out. And as soon as I leave, the talking begins again. Creee-eepy!

Yeah, i've been in that situation before. What do you do? You would think a shy smile and a "hi" would crack the silence, but nope. They NOD, without making eye contact. Oookay.
Haha! I think the guys in the kitchenette are talking about the cute blonde at the front desk....wait, are they old? If so, ignore what I just wrote.
Yay for assemblage.
Not having pizza in two weeks constitutes the phrase "haven't had pizza in so long?" I swore all we ate two weeks ago was pizza and popcorn and those FANTASTIC brownie things Ellen had, and the Doritos and the vegetables....great. Now I'm hungry.
