Today I discovered that I have a Work Mommy. I met Kelly (a single mom with two kids only a couple years younger than me), the first week I started working here. She is a very petite, blond woman with a cheery and fun disposition. Kelly attends church at the church I grew up at and she became really excited when she found out that I graduated from Biola.
Well, today, my flip-flop broke. I was wearing my really cute flip-flops, which I wore as a bridesmaid in a wedding last year. The top part that goes over my toes came out of the soul, so I taped it back together with scotch tape so that I could walk around. However, during my lunch hour, I decided to go see my friend Kelly becasue I thought she might have some better tape... or... something.
I am still not quite sure why I felt compelled to ask Kelly, specifically, for help. Maybe I knew enough about her personality to know that she would want to help me... or maybe I just knew that she likes me.
So I walk over to her desk and I must have been wearing a very sad expression because her face immediately dropped and she said, "What happened?!" in a very serious and intensely concerned tone. So I told her my shoe woes and showed her the problem and you could see her brain start to work. She didn't have tape, but she knew that there would be glue or something useful somewhere in the building (there's a lab downstairs where they build medical gizmos).
So I started to follow her five foot tall frame as she wandered around the offices looking for people... Unfortunately, most everyone was on their lunch break, so no one she had intended to find was available. But as soon as she mentioned Claude's name, I piped up. He's always walking past my desk and making dumb jokes. He is affectionately known as Grumpus by Sandy (another friendly face... she calls me Hon).
I saw Grumpus walk by my desk a little later, but as his name suggests, he can get a little grumpy when something isn't going his way... and he was obviously focused on getting something done, so I chose not to ask him about my shoe at that moment.
However, I also knew that if I waited too long, Kelly would find him and mention my shoe for me. Sure enough, the next time I saw him, he walked right up to my desk and said, "Let me see your shoe." He didn't end up fixing it, but I was still thoroughly amused by the whole incident.... My work Mommy likes to take care of me.
