Memorial Day

The newspaper is solemn but I am not. Memorial Day has never really inspired much contemplation and reverence for me. All it ever really means to me is a day off from school... the weekend the neighborhood pool opens for the summer... the day family friends get together and eat food and talk and laugh.

I always like to put out the flag, though... and I tried to... but our house has been painted recently and my dad totally forgot to put the flag-holder-thing back up. I really do love this country and I am often struck at how fortunate I am to live here instead of somewhere else... I'm just not inspired by the Holidays that are meant to evoke those feelings.

I have friends in the navy, air force, marines, and reserves. Only one of my friends is actually in the Middle East right now, but he's in Afganistan, not Iraq. Strange how that seems conforting now, but it wouldn't have been a year ago.
